The Long Way Home
Oil on Canvas - Jess Thompson-Hughes
Inspired by my years of owning a Morgan Plus 4, The Long Way Home is a celebration of freedom, companionship and the simple pleasure of travelling with nowhere in particular to be.
Set against an imagined coastal landscape inspired by Britain's rugged western shores, the painting captures two people enjoying the timeless experience of open-top motoring beneath a summer sky. The winding road, distant castle ruins and sweeping coastline create a fictional destination, allowing the journey itself to become the true subject of the painting.
Although the Morgan provides the visual centrepiece, this work is not intended as a portrait of a motor car. Instead, it celebrates the emotions associated with classic motoring—the warmth of the sun, the sound of the engine, the scent of the sea air and the feeling of complete freedom that only an open road can provide.
Like many of my paintings, the narrative is deliberately understated. The figures, are not travelling towards a specific destination; they are simply enjoying the experience of being together. For me, the painting is a reminder that some of life's happiest moments are found not in arriving, but in the journey itself.
"It's a painting about choosing the scenic route."
