Breaking Wave

Created as a study in the movement and translucency of water, Breaking Wave marks an important technical exploration during the artist's formative years. Rather than focusing on narrative, the painting concentrates almost entirely on understanding the behaviour of surf: the transparency of curling water, the texture of sea foam and the shifting colours produced by sunlight passing through moving waves.

Although the distant sailing ship and luminous sky establish a sense of place, they ultimately serve the painting's true subject—the perpetual motion of the sea. The study would later inform the artist's more personal coastal paintings, where these observations became integrated naturally into broader narratives.
