Moonlit Bay
Inspired by Claude Joseph Vernet's celebrated nocturnes, Moonlit Bay explores the dialogue between celestial light and human activity. Beneath towering clouds illuminated by a hidden moon, ships lie quietly at anchor while small groups gather around the warmth of a shoreline fire.
Rather than recreating Vernet's eighteenth-century world exactly, my painting embraces atmosphere as its primary subject. Cool blue moonlight washes across water and stone, interrupted only by the intimate glow of firelight—a reminder that even within vast landscapes, human presence remains quietly significant.
The work becomes less an historical reconstruction than a meditation on stillness, craftsmanship and the timeless relationship between people and the sea.
